:: BENEFITS

The TAA provides benefits to qualified workers that include:

  • A weekly monetary allowance equal to the most recent weekly benefit of unemployment insurance preceding the workers first exhaustion of unemployment insurance (20 CFR 617.13).  The maximum amount of total monetary allowance is 52 multiples of the weekly allowance minus the total sum of unemployment insurance to which a worker was entitled in the individual's first benefit period (20 CFR 617.14).

  • Attendance by each worker in a TAA-approved training program (20 CFR 617.22(f)(2)).

  • Reimbursement to the worker of 90 percent of the cost of necessary job search expenses not to exceed $1,250 for any worker (TAA Sec. 121, 20 CFR 617.30 through 617.35).

  • A reallocation allowance of 90 percent of the reasonable and necessary expenses and a lump sum equivalent to 3 times the worker's average weekly wage, up to a maximum payment of $1,250 (TAA sec. 122; 20 CFR 617.47).

  • A 65% tax credit  for health insurance costs of the worker beginning on August 1, 2003 (TAA secs. 201 and 202; Unemployment Insurance Program Letter No.33-03, Employment and Training Administration Advisory System U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, D.C. 20210, August 18, 2003; Unemployment Insurance Program Letter No.24-03, Employment and Training Administration Advisory System U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, D.C. 20210, April 14, 2003).

  • 90% of the total costs of allowable transportation (20 CFR 617.46),'as well as other related assistance under programs administered by the Department of Labor' (TAA sec. 125).


The duration of the benefits is 104 weeks (2 years), in addition to a maximum of 26 weeks of benefits for workers who must complete some remedial education before beginning their retraining programs (20 CFR 617.15)  The benefits are termed trade readjustment allowance (TRA) (20 CFR 617.1).
